Description
This unit plan contains standards-aligned and engaging student-centered lessons relating to the 1970s and 1980s in the United States. Students will examine the Great Society and the Vietnam War, the major protest movements of the 1970s, the Watergate scandal, and then they will examine the complexities of being a president through the presidencies of Ford, Carter, and Reagan. Week 1 – Great Society, Vietnam War & Protest Movements
- Johnson and the Great Society – Explore Johnson’s Great Society through a slideshow and document analysis as students evaluate the impact and limitations of his domestic programs.
- Vietnam War (Day 1) – Students analyze 22 historical photographs in stations to discover how the Vietnam War differed from previous conflicts.
- Vietnam War (Day 2) – Continue the Vietnam War slideshow while students examine Ho Chi Minh’s perspective and the escalation of U.S. involvement under Kennedy and Johnson.
- Vietnam War (Day 3) – Students examine documentary clips that highlight the experiences of soldiers, the draft, and the realities of the Vietnam War.
- Protests of the 1970s (Day 1) – Students investigate major protest movements through a collaborative stations activity that examines the causes and goals of each movement.
Week 2 – Protest Movements, Vietnam War & Watergate
- Protests of the 1970s (Day 2) – Students continue analyzing protest movements while making connections to the Vietnam War and changing public opinion.
- Vietnam War (Day 4) – Students explore the Tet Offensive, Kent State, the bombing of Cambodia, Nixon’s Vietnam policy, and the Fall of Saigon.
- Watergate Scandal – Students bring the Watergate scandal to life through an engaging classroom skit followed by a short reflection activity.
- Ford’s Presidency (Day 1) – Students begin a presidential decision-making simulation where historical choices impact “their” approval ratings as the presidency.
Week 3 – Ford, Carter & Reagan
- Carter’s Presidency (Day 2) – Students continue the presidential simulation while evaluating major domestic and foreign policy decisions.
- Carter/ Reagan Presidency (Day 3) – Students examine additional presidential challenges and determine how key decisions influenced each administration.
- Reagan’s Presidency (Day 4) – Students complete the presidential simulation and compare the successes and challenges of each presidency.
- 1970s and 1980s Review (Day 1) – Students reinforce key concepts and prepare for the assessment with a comprehensive unit review.
Week 4 – Review & Assessment
- 1970s and 1980s Review (Day 2) – Students continue reviewing important vocabulary, historical concepts, and historical thinking skills through a variety of review activities.
- Unit Assessment – Students demonstrate their understanding of the content and historical thinking skills through a summative assessment.
