Description
In this lesson, students will learn about the programs of the Great Society and the major events of the war in Vietnam.
First, students will learn about each of the major programs of the Great Society, and then analyze the success of the Great Society overall by examining some primary sources, Students will also participate in a gallery walk of photographs from the Vietnam War to see how this war was quite different from previous U.S. conflicts. Finally, they will learn about the war through the course of both Johnson’s and Nixon’s presidency. Critical thinking and content review questions are included throughout the unit to assess student understanding. Although the lesson is teacher led, there are multiple opportunities for students to ask questions and engage in discussion.
A CRQ paragraph is included at the end of the unit, but it is not required if teachers have an alternative means of assessment.
Topics Included – The Great Society (including acts like the Food Stamp Act, Medicare, Medicaid etc.), Ho Chi Minh, The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, domino theory, Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, Operation Rolling Thunder, the Tet Offensive, Vietnamization, Kent State, the Pentagon Papers, and peace protests

This lesson addresses the following NYS Social Studies standards:
8.9c – The Great Society programs of President Lyndon Johnson strengthened efforts aimed at reducing poverty and providing health care for the elderly, but the Vietnam War drained resources and divided society.
8.9c.1 – Students will explain the difference between Medicare and Medicaid
8.9c.2 – Students will examine the connection between the Vietnam War, especially the draft, and the growth of a counterculture and peace movement.
