This lesson focuses on 7 protest movements of the 1970s. Students will research the basics of each of 7 major movements – including; the Indian American movement, the Anti-War movement, the Environmental movement, the LGBT movement, the Chicano Movement, the Women’s Liberation movement, and the Disability Rights movement. Each movement is independently included, so teachers can choose to focus on less if time is an issue. Each topic is also provided at a reading level and content level that is appropriate for middle school students.

This lesson addresses the following NYS Social Studies standards:

8.9b – The civil rights movement prompted renewed efforts for equality by women and other groups.

8.9b.1 – Students will examine struggles for equality and factors that enabled or limited success on behalf of women, farm workers, Native Americans, the disabled, and the LGBT community.

8.9c.2 – Students will examine the connection between the Vietnam War, especially the draft, and the growth of a counterculture and peace movement.
