Description

This lesson plan provides teachers with a creative way to teach what can be a dry topic. The Seneca Falls Convention is made much more fun by having students act out this important event. You can view more in the preview here.

Characters Include:

  • Narrator
  • Leader of the Convention
  • Wendell Phillips – Abolitionist at the World Anti-Slavery Convention
  • Frederick Douglass – African American abolitionist who attended the Seneca Falls Convention
  • Elizabeth Cady Stanton – Leader of the Seneca Falls Convention
  • Henry Stanton – Husband of Elizabeth Cady Stanton
  • Lucretia Mott – Leader of the Seneca Falls Convention
  • James Mott – Husband of Lucretia Mott
  • Mary Ann McClintock – Attendee of the Seneca Falls Convention
  • Richard Hunt – Quaker Abolitionist

  • Matilda Joslyn Gage – Women’s rights activist
  • All of the people at the Convention – the whole class

The play is based on the basic facts of the case, although I only relied on some dialogue. I’ve added in some fun little jokes that I know your students will enjoy (as I’ve been teaching these grades for a long time, I know what students will find funny). My students and I had bunches of fun acting this out in class.

This lesson plan is linked with the NYS Social Studies standards, however, I’m sure you could add your own. It includes a 1-page lesson plan, a 4-page script, and a short exit ticket to check for understanding.
