Students Write a Hamilton vs. Jefferson Rap Battle - The unit plan includes three formative lessons that build the students' skills and background knowledge about Washington's presidency, the political differences between Hamilton and Jefferson, the U.S. response to the French Revolution and the Whiskey Rebellion. It culminates with summative project that requires the students to write a "rap battle" about the Whiskey Rebellion.

This lesson discusses the main aspects of John Adams' Presidency, including, the XYZ Affair, the Alien and Sedition Acts, trade issues, and the elections of 1796 and 1800. In order to make this lesson more interactive for students, I've included Pear Deck questions. (They are not required to make this lesson a success!)

Reader's Theater - This lesson plan provides teachers with a creative way to teach what can be a dry topic. The topic of Marbury v. Madison is incredibly important, yet it rarely understood clearly by students. As a result of this confusion, I've designed a simple little skit that lays out the major events. Characters include a Narrator, William Marbury, Anne Marbury, John Marshall, James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Joseph Story.

This lesson discusses the main aspects of Thomas Jefferson's foreign policy, including, the Louisiana Purchase, the Haitian Revolution, and the Barbary Pirates. In order to make this lesson more interactive for students, I've included Pear Deck questions. (They are not required to make this lesson a success!)

This lesson discusses the the causes and effects of the War of 1812. To understand the causes, the class will visit an interactive website that discusses why people were both for and against the War of 1812. In order to understand the impact of the war, students will visit four stations which represent varying impacts. Students will examine primary sources to find the the evidence related to those impacts.

For this lesson, students use cartoon analysis to learn about the Monroe Doctrine. They start by analyzing cartoons that represent the main idea of the Monroe Doctrine. As a class, students then compile the data from the varying cartoons and figure out what the Monroe Doctrine was all about.

This lesson has students practice decoding skills, close reading, and point of view. This lesson fits perfectly with a Unit about the early Presidents (George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and James Monroe) and it's great as an end of the year activity. There are no breakout boxes or locks required, just some big envelopes!
