Description

With this activity, students will listen to one of the more accessible podcasts from American History Tellers – The Gilded Age – Workers Revolt! The guided notes are broken into sections for students. The way the students will interact with the podcast requires them to listen, but they will not be overwhelmed by answering questions with full sentence answers. This podcast discusses the Haymarket bombing, the Homestead strike, and the Pullman strike. Teachers can use all three sections or any of the individual sections. (There is also a section in the podcast about the Populist movement, however, that section goes into a ton more detail than is needed. Therefore, that section is skipped.) You can view more in the preview here.

Topics included: The Homestead strike, the Haymarket bombing, the Pullman strike, the Pinkertons, the American Federation of Labor, the Knights of Labor / the concerns of labor in general

Products included in this resource:

  • A 5-page handout for students with podcast notes and an exit ticket – Google Slides version (editable), PowerPoint (editable), and a PDF version
  • A digital version of the lesson – this is meant for teachers to use with Pear Deck but it could be used with Google Slides also
