The Market and Industrial Revolutions pr

Market Revolution & Industrial Revolutions - the Factory System, New Inventions

With this lesson, students will learn all about new inventions, technologies, and the transformation of rural life that occurred during the Market Revolution. Centering this conversation around the Market Revolution makes this experience much more meaningful for students as they can then see how dramatically changed this experience was for the people of New England and the Midwest. They will also immerse themselves in history by performing a mini-skit about one of the first strikes in U.S. History - a strike of the Lowell girls.

Women's Rights - The Seneca Falls Convention Skit - Reader's Theater

This lesson plan provides teachers with a creative way to teach what can be a dry topic. The Seneca Falls Convention is made much more fun by having students act out this important event. My students had bunches of fun acting this out in class! The play is based on the basic facts of the case, although I only relied on some dialogue. I've added in some fun little jokes that I know your students will enjoy (as I've been teaching these grades for a long time, I know what students will find funny).

The Era of Digital Reform

Reform Movements - Temperance, Education, Mental Illness, and Prison Reform

This lesson discusses three major reform movements of the Antebellum Era - the Temperance Reform Movement, Education Reform, and the Prison Reform Movement. Students will read about the problems the reformers were trying to address. They will then brainstorm solutions to those problems by discussing how social issues can be addressed or improved by society. The issues of the 1800s have carried over to the modern day, so they are very relatable to students.

Irish Famine - Irish Immigration - Irish Immigrants - Examining Bias in Cartoons

This lesson discusses the history surrounding the Irish famine and Irish immigration, and it also shows the racial bias and mistreatment that existed for Irish immigrants in the 1800s. The students will learn about bias, and then examine cartoons that depicted the Irish unfairly. This lesson works great for teaching bias because it seems so obvious to students today. The lesson includes a handout that teaches students to read cartoons for specific kinds of imagery.
