Description

The Americas – Graphic Organizer for PBS “First Peoples”

This lesson plan correlated with a documentary aired by PBS titled “First Peoples.” One of the sections of the video – The First Americans – dovetailed nicely with one of NYS teaching standards for Social Studies from the new Social Studies framework – specifically:

7.1a Geography and climate influenced the migration and cultural development of Native Americans. Native Americans in North America settled into different regions and developed distinct cultures.

7.1a.1 – Students will examine theories of human settlement of the Americas.

Through this lesson, the students will read through a short reading that provides background information. Then, they will view the video and fill out a graphic organizer that helps them to outline the theories of migration to North and South America. This lesson will last approximately 2 – 40 minute class periods.

I’ve included both a classroom version and a digital version in this file (both in Google Slides). Teachers will need to provide separate access to the video.
