Description

This documentary is one of the few I show my Social Studies classes. This video covers the slavery that came after the passage of the 13th amendment. It deals specifically with convict labor and debt peonage. There are interviews with descendants of those placed in convict labor or debt peonage along with reenactments and historical context. It’s an excellent video, and really eye opening for my students.

This viewing guide provides guiding questions for students for the full video – Slavery by Another Name. A key is included to check for accuracy and to provide to Special Education students for differentiation. There are 22 questions in all. I like to pause the documentary to go over the answers, so this provides enough to keep them engaged without making the process unwieldy.

The videos are currently available on online for free.
