Description

These handouts are designed to help students hone their historical thinking skills more specifically. Each handout requires that they source the document and then the questions asked help them to critically analyze the document with one of their historical thinking skills.

These can be utilized with all types of primary sources, and I’ve included a list of websites to help teachers source different types of sources. Newsela is popular choice because the lexile score can be changed.

There are four handouts for each of the following historical thinking skills – purpose, point of view, reliability and intended audience. Each sheet has two different versions – one has sentence stems to help guide students, and one doesn’t. Within the different versions, there are text based handouts and more visually designed handouts. You can see more in the preview here.

These handouts can also be provided digitally though Google Classroom. The handouts are specifically modified so that students can only edit the textboxes.

Included within this resource:

● A PowerPoint version of the product (editable)

● A PDF version of the product (not editable)

● A Google Slides Version of the document (The link provided will prompt you to make your own file. You can then add that file to your drive and share with your students. Instructions are provided within the lesson plan.) This version is locked so that students can only modify the text boxes.

● A list of primary source websites
