Description

For this lesson, students investigate the 8 Native American Cultural Areas. The students will read articles related to the Native American cultural areas on Khan Academy. They will then practice sourcing artifacts related to Native Americans. There is a graphic organizer and an exit ticket already provided for easy analysis.

This lesson requires access to technology – the students need to be able to access Khan Academy to skim through the articles and take notes. The digital version has these articles linked directly, and students enter the information they collect right into the lesson created with Google Slides. You can see more in the preview here.

This lesson is more focused on having students learn the skills of “Sourcing” and reviewing the skill of “Compare and Contrast.” I am not as concerned with having students know all of the detailed information relating to Native American cultural areas. I want them to understand how to access that information and how to analyze that information.

The lesson is linked to NYS Social Studies Standards, but you could easily cut and paste in your own standards for your state.

NYS Framework Standards:

7.1a.2 – COMPARE and CONTRAST different Native American cultural groups

with a focus on the influence geographic factors had on their development.

7.1a.3 – EXAMINE the various Native American cultural groups located within

what became New York State, and the influence geographic factors had on their development.

This zip file includes a PDF version a PowerPoint version and a link to a Google Slides version. Both the PowerPoint and the Google Slides versions are fully EDITABLE.
