Description

This is one of my favorite discussions of the year! This lesson discusses Portuguese, Spanish, English and French exploration with a focus on Christopher Columbus, Bartolomeu Dias, Vasco da Gama, Henry Hudson, Jaques Cartier, and Giovanni da Verrazano. Students assess whether the era should be known as one of “exploration or “conquest.”

To help my students focus on the discussion, I’ve created a set of illustrated notes to improve concentration. There are four pages of illustrated notes (fully editable) and an exit ticket to check for understanding. I’ve also included a slideshow for presenting the information. You can view more in the preview here.

The digital version is specifically made and laid out for distance learning. Students can complete the lesson synchronously or asynchronously.

The lesson is linked to NYS Social Studies Standards, but you could easily cut and paste in your own standards for your state.

NYS Framework Standards:

7.2a.1 – EXPLAIN the significance of the technological developments and scientific understandings that improved European exploration such as the caravel, magnetic compass, and astrolabe.

7.2a.2 – EXAMINE the voyage of Columbus, leading to the Columbian Exchange and the voyages of other explorers such as Champlain, Hudson, and Verrazano.

7.2b – Different European groups had varied interactions and relationships with the Native American societies they encountered. Native American societies suffered from loss of life due to disease and conflict and loss of land due to encroachment of European settlers and differing conceptions of property and land ownership.
