Description

Teach students about the heroism of African American Civil War soldiers and participants in the War!

In discussing the Civil War with my students, I often noticed that the individual stories associated with the war were rather lost. I wanted students to learn more about the extraordinary stories associated with those who fought or supported the Civil War, particularly those stories of strength among African Americans, who were literally fighting for their freedom. With this lesson, students learn both the overall contributions associated with African Americans during the Civil War, and then they also investigate the individual stories. They then create pennants representing one individual’s story for hanging around the classroom.

This product includes a 2-page background reading about African Americans in the Civil War, 4 pennant templates for students, and full directions. The directions list 28 possible individuals to research and a simple 5 point rubric for grading. The list includes mostly men, however, I had to add a few women. Although they could not participate officially, they still have amazing stories of involvement. Students will need access to the internet to research these stories, however, many websites are readily available.

Included in this resource:

  • A handout for students – Google Slides version (editable), PowerPoint (editable), and a PDF version
  • A Digital Version for distance learning
  • A lesson plan for implementation

NYS Standards:

7.8d.4 – Students will examine the enlistment of freed slaves and how this helped to change the course of the Civil War.

7.8e.1 – Students will examine the roles of women, civilians, and free African Americans during the Civil War
